Ava Valianti – Laugh Track (2025)
Eager to explore and celebrate life in all its grit and glory, singer-songwriter Ava Valianti delicately picks things apart, challenging everything beneath the surface, and she takes us along for the ride. From the painful memories of moving on from lost love in ‘January’, to the struggle of growing up in ‘Wishing Well’, each of Valianti’s songs resonates with audiences on an intimate, profound, and quite intense way. Today, we take a look at her latest single, ‘Laugh Track’. Are you ready? Let’s go!
Following the well-received single ‘Wishing Well’, ‘Laugh Track’ tips into the existential issue of simply being. Instead of oscillating between the simplicity of youth and the celebration of moving ahead, ‘Laugh Track’ explores the underlying essence of not having control of your life. Almost a theme for The Truman Show, Valianti frames her life as a television show where everything seems to be going all right, but are you merely a cog in the machine where people are watching you and judging? She explains:
“I wrote ‘Laugh Track’ as a way to process the feeling of always being “on” – like I’m performing even when no-one’s watching. I’ve always had this weird sense that my life is being observed, like I’m in some kind of TV show where my mistakes are the punchline. This song is me stepping back and asking, “Am I in control of my own story, or am I just playing a part?”
Powerful and potent, the lyricism of ‘Laugh Track’ hits you in the chest with its entrenched raw vulnerability, stirring your soul; however, it is the juxtaposition of the light-hearted melody that makes it more sincere. Produced with Modslee and Tate Pinyochon, a folk-pop lightness rides on the charming blend of soaring guitars, shimmering percussion and warming piano, so you find yourself tapping your toe and finding the reference to Ted Mosby the architect amusing. Yet, the easy vocals, infectious joviality, and tender grace masks the desperation beneath.
