Ava Bryant – My Life So Far (2022)

From Voyage Houston Magazine to Pop Muzik, Music Injection and Skope Mag, singer-songwriter Ava Bryant is reaching ears on an international scale. Captivating hearts far beyond her North American shores, Bryant hopes her music will be “…a source of comfort” for those global audiences – the quote taken from her interview with Voyage Houston Magazine. Despite causing waves in the music industry for several years, this is my introduction to the indie-pop sensation. The latest addition to her discography is her EP My Life So Far.

In the same interview with Voyage Houston Magazine, Bryant shared that one aspect of music she truly loves is its subjectivity. She described all of her songs as being “…personal to me and the things I’ve lived and learned, I have come to find as a writer that people have a lot more in common than we tend to expect…” – perhaps this is why her passionate music connects so intimately with listeners. She “…put[s] my whole heart into everything I write…so I love to think that people can listen to my songs and feel safe knowing that someone out there is feeling the same things as them.”

Alright, now to the EP.

Opening with the upbeat, high-paced track ‘who the hell am i?’, Bryant tosses us into a comfortable pop bubble that travels along a glistening sonic river. From ‘it’s so fun!’ to ‘forget me’ and ‘give me you’, Bryant’s music has the refreshing contemporary pop-ness reminiscent of Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey. The thing is, while there is a light-hearted, laidback vibe to the singles, there is a depth in Bryant’s poetic lyricism.

Touching on issues like angst, excitement, frustration, fear, vulnerability and confusion, My Life So Far is an exploration of human life in its entirety – sort of. In fact, it is a sonic exposition of young adulthood making difficult decisions, facing challenging situations and, fortunately, coming out on the other side. Interestingly, as complex and intricate as the lyricism is, Bryant showcases innovativeness with juxtapositions of poignant content in jovial melodies.

While I enjoy the five tracks on My Life So Far, the final song ‘we’ll be okay’ has to be my favourite. Not only is it a steadier, more flowing single with tinges of indie-rock guitars in the back, but it also has a more sophisticated quality to the arrangement. Moreover, the song brings a sense of empowerment and hopefulness to the message of the EP. Sincere, sentimental, genuine and filled with reflective intimacy, My Life So Far is one of Ava Bryant’s musical masterpieces.
