Autorub – Oh Marjorie (2022)
The brainchild of singer-songwriter and producer Michael Corn, Autorub brings together elements of classic and contemporary rock into a melodic and memorable sound. With 25 years in the music industry, Corn has composed songs for award-winning shows (Leah Remini: Scientology & The Aftermath), had placements on notable shows like The Oprah Winfrey Show and The Tonight Show, performed with established bands from different genres and produces material with Heydevils’ Cliff Mays. As a musician, Michael has performed in genres ranging from jazz to indie-rock and everything in between. All in all, Corn needs no real introduction and the introduction we gave is a brief but impressive one. It’s a fair guess this guy is pretty talented.
With over 13 years playing drums in the Paul Joseph Quartet, Corn has been involved in unique interpretations of genres with the band. As part of his solo project Autorub, Corn continues to use this innovative approach to music. His debut single ‘Oh Marjorie’ folds classic rock, pop-rock and contemporary rock into a decadent sonic cake. Well-textured and elegantly arranged, the pounding drums and dynamic guitars make the two-and-a-half-minute track something you could keep playing. What I find interesting is how all the instrumentation has a prominent sound but comes together in a sophisticated whole.
One thing I truly love about ‘Oh Marjorie’ is how the laidback, cheerful melody gets you tapping your toe; however, the lyrical theme is far more profound. An intimate song with personal narrative, ‘Oh Marjorie’ “…is relatable to any relationship in which one partner has taken a trip down the rabbit hole…” Quite comical in places with Corn’s rich tones building you up, but still a delicate look at human vulnerability.
Melodic, intimate, sincere, sentimental and a ton of fun, Autorub’s ‘Oh Marjorie’ is highly recommended. I cannot wait for more from this talented artist.
