Autorub – Meatball (2023)

From compositions for award-winning and nominated TV shows like Leah Remini: Scientology & The Aftermath, to a voice-over for the American Thoracic Society, production for Heydevils and touring with the Great Red Shark, musician Michael Corn has his fingers in many pies. With over two decades of experience, it’s safe to say that US-based Corn is an established veteran in most areas of the music industry. As interesting as his compositions, performances and voice-over work may be, we’re here to hear his music as Autorub.

Created during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, Autorub is one of those acts rising from the depths of global angst. A provocative artist sharing commentary on society and political situations, Autorub used a sarcastic narrative poking fun at US Republicanism in his debut EP, America The Sick. Since that 2021 release, Autorub went on to critical acclaim with ‘Oh Marjorie!’, ‘Kari Lake Blocked Me On Twitter’, and now ‘Meatball’. With experience in bands like the Paul Joseph Quartet, Sammy [Geffen], Heydevils and Selector, Corn acknowledges and embraces diverse interpretations of music from various perspectives; and this is his aim with solo project Autorub. Sauntering through various genres such as hip-hop and post-punk, Corn presents eclectic and diverse sounds in his melodies.

Adopting a strong rock-flavoured style, Autorub not only slithers through flavours of rock but adds a political slant to the sarcastic lyricism in ‘Meatball’. While the core of ‘Meatball’ leans toward pop-rock, flutters of indie-rock, hard rock and even Americana sprinkle innovation and originality into the song. Pounding drums match dynamic guitars with a rush of forcefulness; however, despite this brash swoop of sound, Corn’s bold vocals slather rich comfort with grin-inducing calm. Sophisticated and elegant, ‘Meatball’ spans decades of rock with distant nostalgic whiffs of The Kinks, Foo Fighters and Green Day. Yet, it simultaneously has the pace of modern rock in its fist-pumping tones.

Sarcastic but light-hearted, raw but polished, rebellious confidence with a twist of ironic vulnerability, Corn raises his eyebrow giving you a cheeky smile while singing at the top of his voice in ‘Meatball’.
