Atrem – All Night Cinema (2022)

Atrem is bringing a fusion of Japanese pop, a stunning piano melody and mellow vocals resting over an industrial beat in ‘All Night Cinema’. Told through two distinct parts, the single shows two faces of Atrem’s sound, furthering the beauty of their previous releases. The dark and electronic pop style of the single is a little different to the post-rock style that has shimmered through the ambient tones of the band’s sound.

Consisting of Ryuichi Shima (vocals, guitar, keys) and Yusuke Kamimura (bass), the duo seamlessly moves from one genre to another. With their genre-defying style, they offer us a unique sound that transcends language barriers through the power of their musicality. If you are looking for a single that gets you bopping to the sound while relaxing into the music, this is the track for you.

The beautiful flow of the piano that opens ‘All Night Cinema’ is stunning and brings a dance of lights in a night sky to your senses. You can’t deny the beauty of the sound as it relaxes your muscles and has you sinking back to soak up its beauty. Through the opening verse, the main piano line drives the sound, while a lighter tone chimes in the upper levels. They are joined by a darker electronic pop beat that adds a new edge to the single. The play between these tones is fantastic as it opens a wealth of possibilities that weave through your mind. While the interplay could be jarring, the masterful arrangement of the melody avoids this even as the more industrial edge of the beat makes its way into the track. This brings a scratch of darkness to the light of the piano before subsiding and letting the piano move into the foreground again as the single starts to move into the second part. This section is driven more by the beats while the piano and lighter tones are more removed and seem to drift farther from you.

While the melody alone is enough to engage you, Shima’s vocals are a sigh of softness against the opening piano line. His performance is in Japanese, but there is a tenderness to his performance that helps to transcend the language barrier. His performance invites you to sink even further into the softness of the single while the heavy beats rise below you. The interplay that is created in the melody is taken to another level with the introduction of the vocals that retain their softness throughout the single. Even if you can’t understand the words, you can feel the story they are telling and it is really beautiful.

Through the tender touches of ‘All Night Cinema’, Atrem draws us into a delicate sound that reaches out into space and is bolstered by a masterful twist of industrial beats. The delicate touch of the piano and the vocals set your soul at ease and have you sinking into the Japanese lyrics. The heavier touch of the beats has been perfectly moulded to fit with the tenderness of the overall sound.
