Ask Carol – Quiet One (2022)
Ask Carol’s blues-rock sound has had us hooked since we first heard their single ‘Do It In LA’. Since then, they have continued to wow with ‘Darkest Hour’ and ‘Tonight’. Now they are turning their addictive sound to the feeling that nobody understands you in ‘Quiet One’. Haunting and melodic, yet catchy and cinematic, the single mixes dreamy indie rock with some dark alternative pop.
Through all of this, the duo behind the music considers being the odd one out and the feelings of insecurity that can come from this. While looking at being the outsider, the single gives us a taste of what their upcoming debut album has in store for us. As the second single from the album, it highlights the intimate yet dynamic vocals and the infectious movement of the melody.
‘Quiet One’ draws you in with a rather decadent guitar line. There is something about the music that seems to undulate beneath your feet like shifting sand. This shifting feeling is tinged with a haunting feeling like there is a darkness beneath the sands waiting to grab you. The melody rises on the chorus, losing some of the darkness, only to replay it with a cinematic sweep. There is a wonderful blend of blues and rock throughout the single that keeps you moving forward through the melody. Later in the track, the sandy path gives way to a heavier rock wash that crashes against your senses like the waves of the ocean. The melody is really masterful as it brings the different elements of the track together perfectly.
As the music pulls you into its haunting undulation, the vocals enter with an intimate feeling. Carol’s vocals caress your cheek like a gentle breeze that lightly nudges you in the direction it wants to go. This takes a dynamic turn on the chorus as the vocals rise with a delightful power. As the single progresses, the flow of intimate to dynamic continues, creating a forward momentum that picks up the push of the melody. Between the vocals and music, you can’t help but move through the single. The chorus is undeniably catchy and fills you with the urge to yell out with the band.
