Arn-Identified Flying Objects and Alien Friends – Smash (2023)

From Europe to South America, Australia to Canada, singer-songwriter Arne Floryd is captivating audiences with his solo project Arn-Identified Flying Objects and Alien Friends. Since its formation (can you say a solo project is formed or just founded?) in 2020, Floryd has been described as “audacious…” (Headbanger News), “arriving with animation and a care to captivate” (Music For All) and having “…compositional excellence…” (Sinusoidal Music). No stranger to The Other Side Reviews, we are well aware of the unique sound emanating from Arn-Identified Flying Objects and Alien Friends; however, every time we hit the play button we feel as if this is the first time we’re hearing the Swedish artist.

Following his double-sided single ‘No Sweet Dreams/ I Dreamt I Met Elvis’, Arne Floyrd collaborates once again with the talented producer and multi-instrumentalist David Myhr on ‘Smash’. Not only is Myhr by his side, but this single also features the musical stylings of drummer Andreas Quincy Dahlbäck and vocalist Stefan Petersson. Taken from the most recent album No Sweets For E., ‘Smash’ showcases Arn-Identified Flying Objects and Alien Friends’ versatility when it comes to genre but also his hard-hitting attitude tapping into a rock meets punk sound. Floyrd explains that ‘Smash’ “was an attempt to write a rockabilly tune, though it turned out more punk/garage band than originally intended.”

One aspect I love about Arn-Identified Flying Objects and Alien Friends is how he encapsulates a nostalgic hint of the 50s and 60s in his melodies but presents them with a modern-day, contemporary attitude. Coming in at only two minutes, ‘Smash’ melds pounding drums with dynamic guitars and obscure vocals hitting you right between the eyes as you twirl about in a mystic haze. It’s fabulously charming but simultaneously fierce.

Known for his poetic lyricism, ‘Smash’ presents a sense of irony in its honest content. Floyrd explains that “…the reference to Hezekiel of the Bible shouldn’t be taken too seriously in this tale of sell-outs and dreamers in the music industry.” Profound but piercing with a fiery passion within, Arn-Identified Flying Objects and Alien Friends is completely unforgettable.
