Arn-Identified Flying Objects and Alien Friends – My Favourite Song (2023)

No stranger to The Other Side Reviews, Arn-Identified Flying Objects and Alien Friends made his way to our ears and hearts with various singles last year. From ‘But Come On Now!’ to ‘By Your Bed’, the solo project of Swedish artist Arne Floryd turned not only our heads but the heads of various critics across the blogosphere. Described as “…smashing…” (TJPL News) and “…everything neatly wrapped and tied up in a bow gifted to the world” (Indie Music Flix), Arn-Identified Flying Objects and Alien Friends is gaining critical acclaim on a global basis. One of the most recent additions to his well-received discography is ‘My Favourite Song’.

Following the double-sided single ‘No Sweet Dreams/ I Dreamt I Met Elvis’, ‘My Favourite Song’ is the opening track of Floyrd’s new album No Sweets For E. Blasting into 2023 with this eleven-track album, Floyrd traipses various genres from folk to pop and soul, tinged with a rock-inspired sentimentality. Unlike the upbeat country track ‘My Work’ and alternative rock song ‘Smash’, ‘My Favourite Song’ sends slivers of soul-rock through a power-pop meets pop-rock melody.

Energetic and electric, ‘My Favourite Song’ effortlessly sends shivers down your spine with its rock-inspired tone; however, the toe-tapping soul sound with interspersed horns adds another dimension to the song. Produced and performed in collaboration with multi-talented musician David Myhr, as well as drummer Andreas Quincy Dahlbäack, ‘My Favourite Song’ has a sophisticated arrangement albeit it with a raw sense of vulnerable naivety. It is this line between innocence and maturity that makes the melody so intriguing.

While the melody can hold its own, it is the theme of ‘My Favourite Song’ that makes me sit back and pay attention. Looking at life through a spyglass, Arn-Identified Flying Objects and Alien Friends tell us that life is, well, a mess. Yet, the thing that keeps us going is the pure joy found in small pleasures.

“The lyrics conclude that life can be shit, but that it has a few beautiful moments: a favourite song played on the radio, the smell of roses during summer, a cup of coffee…” – Arn-Identified Flying Objects and Alien Friends on ‘My Favourite Song’
