Arctic Lights – Somebody (2023)

There is a wild series of compilation albums out there that goes under the joint title of ‘Brown Acid’, which unearths and collects the games from the long-gone era when psych-rock was turning into all forms of hard and heavy rock. Many of the fans of the series, and there are quite a few of them out there, have been asking themselves if it was possible for more current bands to update that sound. Keeping its original essence intact but bringing it up to modern times as far as the sound is concerned and, of course, no vinyl scratches, please.

Well, it seems one current band is fulfilling their wish. It is the Irish duo from Cork consisting of Liam O’Callaghan and Edward Butt that goes under the name of Arctic Lights, and it seems that ‘Somebody’ is exactly what the doctor ordered for all the fans of high-energy guitar rock. The pair sounds like they are fans of the ‘Brown Acid’ series themselves. They have got fully into the spirit of the rock at the turn of the 60s into the 70s without being copycats but actually refurbishing that sound and turning it into something quite current. The energy and the bite they bring to the song add to its quality.

This exciting duo has made quite an impression on the music scene since releasing their debut single ‘King of America’ in January 2021 (voted the best video in the Cork Playlist Awards in 2021). Since then, they have been consistently releasing music with ‘Somebody’ being their 10th single. By doing this, they have gained a rapidly increasing fanbase and ever-expanding following on social media and streaming platforms such as Spotify and Bandcamp.

Hopefully, an album will be soon on offer.
