April Gallo – Help Yourself (2021)
Drawing together the intimacy of Lana Del Rey with the eccentricity of Amy Winehouse, April Gallo is a breath of fresh air in the indie music scene. Sensual, sensitive and sincere, her heartfelt lyrics are beautifully executed in her soaring vocals. Influenced greatly by iconic jazz singers like Erykah Badu and Amy Winehouse, Gallo’s music is pure and unique. Despite being a relatively new fish in the ocean, the Australian beauty has featured on Sinusoidal Music and several playlists, now including our OSR Pop Playlist. The latest addition to Gallo’s discography is the single ‘Help Yourself’.
With primarily covers on her YouTube Channel, Gallo shows she can imitate the best adding a unique flair to the songs; however, it is her original material that truly shows her natural talent. Recorded in a Brunswick studio with guitarist Kumar Shome, keyboardist Jeremy Bennett, bass guitarist Nick Delaney and producer KB808, ‘Help Yourself’ is a song filled with strong beats and flowing melodies. A superb musical arrangement, the instrumentation forms a powerful foundation for Gallo’s beautiful vocals. While I could listen to the melody alone and be quite content, it is the vocals that add the proverbial cherry on top in this kaleidoscopic soundscape.
It’s obvious Gallo is a stunner on the surface, but her beauty runs deep as she serenades us with her charming voice. She shares that her music is “…the opportunity to transcend musical experiences and technical training” with ‘Help Yourself’ being “…a song which aims to inspire women to find independence and strength within themselves.” Heartwarming, tender and honest, the track is haunting but also has a lingering sense of empowerment for listeners across the globe.
