Antonia Vai – Those Wolves (2023)

Since her early childhood, Swedish/Hungarian singer-songwriter Antonia Vai has been playing instruments, writing songs and embracing her passion for music. Skip ahead a few years to 2012 and you have an older, more mature Antonia Vai releasing two self-produced albums. In 2013, she had a breakthrough on the Hungarian music scene gaining the title “bohemian soul diva” and building a loyal following. Skip ahead another few years – actually a decade – and we find Vai turning heads on an international scale with her solo music. From RGM to Music Arena GH, Find A Song, Mesmerized, and Illustrate Magazine (to name but a few), Vai reaches audiences on a cross-continental level. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Those Wolves’.

Hot on the heels of her track ‘Where The Bluebirds Fly’, Vai blends elements of pop and rock in her dark, mystical single ‘Those Wolves’. While her music is rooted in folk and acoustic pop, Vai meets her desire to blend genres creating something obscure and unique in her new single. Rather difficult to define, although I will do my best, ‘Those Wolves’ is sparse but forceful. The acoustic arrangement seems to draw you in and leave you walking about a foggy marsh trying to find your way home but knowing you’re lost at sea.

While the melody itself can turn my head, it is Antonia Vai’s vocals that add something special to the obscure single. Using spoken word vocals there is a simplicity to the soundscape; however, despite the minimalist nature, it is kaleidoscopic. Desperate with darkness lingering in the broody track, Vai elegantly captures the theme of the song: control. Vai explains that ‘Those Wolves’ is “a personal song that quickly evolved into a political track…the heart of the song is people who hold power over you.” She further shares, “every truth be told, what has been thrown into the deep waters will sink at first but unavoidably float up in the end. ‘Wolves’ is about this, remembering the right to your story, to yourself.”
