Anton Commissaris – Baby, Can We Fall In Love (2024)

Reminding me of the dance scene in The Addams Family: Addams Family Values with Morticia and Gomez swirling about in their favourite restaurant, ‘Baby, Can We Fall In Love’ brims with passionate love floored by intricate steps. Now, Anton Commissaris’ jazz-filled single might not have the heat of the Spanish tune; however, its bold personality captures the essence of romance.

I hear you whisper the question, who is Anton Commissaris; well, let me introduce him. Fusing a unique brand of soul and jazz incensed with rhythmic Latin-influenced sentiments, Commissaris is an enigmatic singer-songwriter hailing from the USA. His vocals lilt toward Frank Sinatra, while his melodies are inspired by iconic artists like Stevie Wonder and Cole Porter. Intoxicating and capturing, Commisaris has released several EPs and singles turning heads on an international scale.

Now, back to the music…

Following the 2023 EP, Soul Safari, Anton Commissaris saunters into 2024 with the song ‘Baby, Can We Fall In Love’. Shifting from previous tracks ‘All Up (Get Down)’ and ‘Love Somebody’, ‘Baby, Can We Fall In Love’ lean further toward 1920s jazz. On first listen, I easily imagine Michael Bublé or Harry Connick Jr. performing the track, mainly because of their crooner-esque style. Yet, the Sinatra-tinged ‘Baby, Can We Fall In Love’ would be nothing without Commissaris’ unique vocals and mystical charm.

From the swaying guitars, piano and light drums to a pulsating bossa nova beat, the tune is light-hearted and laidback with happiness oozing from every chord. A true dance floor-worthy song, it’s easy to think of flowing skirts, joyful smiles and a well-trained salsa dance routine; however, more lurks beneath the flowery Spanish groove. Both coy and slightly carnal, a sliver of infatuation and lust weaves in ‘Baby, Can We Fall In Love’. Barely noticeable, the twinkling glint of “you’re about to fall head over heels with giddy veils of hazy brightness” flaps its wings in the song prompting the freedom of dance and the clutch of love.
