Annika Jayne – Cafe Of The Lost Dreams (And The New Horizons) (2024)
Singer-songwriter Annika Jayne reached our ears a few years ago bringing a sense of peace; however, she inspired audiences for several years beforehand. In 2010, she released her first album Fabulous Sceneries and in 2016, Jayne participated in the Labos Chanson workshop organised by Voix Du Sud. By 2020, Jayne established herself as an intoxicating musical force; it was only in 2020 that we came across her with her EP Nostalgia and single ‘By Your Side’. I can go on and on about Jayne’s fantastic releases, engaging melodies and her natural storytelling skills to enchant listeners, but I want to jump ahead to her latest single ‘Café Of The Lost Dreams (And The New Horizons)’.
The younger sister of Joni Mitchell and Suzanne Vega, Annika Jayne follows her well-received single ‘This Dream Inside My Heart’ with ‘Café Of The Lost Dreams (And The New Horizons)’. Self-recorded at a home studio, then mixed and mastered by Brady Jo, ‘Café Of The Lost Dreams (And The New Horizons)’ draws a raw vulnerability and playful charm through sophisticated production.
In its acoustic soundscape, the single’s elegance is mixed with innocence holding you in a warm embrace comforted by Jayne’s delicate hand. Interestingly, as the stark guitar combines with Jayne’s rich, warm vocals in a barebones minimalism there is also a vivid kaleidoscopic sheen highlighting the beauty of simplicity.
Taken from her upcoming album Cats & Coffee Cups, to be released later in 2024, ‘Café Of The Lost Dreams (And The New Horizons)’ embodies the overall concept of spreading comfort in difficult times. Jayne explains:
“I wrote this song when I was in a very dark place and I believe that with everything that is going on in the world (wars, climate crisis, the rise of fascism) people need hope and comfort and faith. That’s why I think a lot of people can relate to this song. Just as the cosy fantasy genre has become a hit in the book world (think Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree), I hope my songs can find a similar audience. In Legends and Lattes, the taste of coffee is described as peace. I hope that’s what people will find in my song.”
