Annie Dressner – For The Thrill Of It (2025)

Nearly a year on, I am still listening to Annie Dressner’s last record, I Thought It Would Be Easier. So, I couldn’t have been happier to hear that she was back with a brand new single. Teaming with Kathryn Williams, Dressner has continued right where she left off with her own brand of Americana.

With ‘For The Thrill Of It’, Dressner has done what she always does well, taking a serious subject and keeping it light and relatable. When describing the track, she gave a great example of this and made me look deeper into the narrative. Dressner explains: “The message in the lyrics is about the pervasive issue of misogyny in the music industry, where inappropriate behaviour too often goes unaddressed or overlooked; the song aims to inspire positive change in attitudes towards women in music and to encourage women to feel safe in speaking out.”

I especially liked how some of the examples are explored in the lyrics – what people will do if they think they don’t see any consequences – finally summing it all up with the final line: “You know you can’t have it and that’s the thrill of it”. Overall, it’s just a great track, a wonderful example of what a folk song should be: catchy yet meaningful.

I was delighted to hear ‘For The Thrill Of It’ earn its first play on BBC Radio 6 Music during Riley and Coe a couple of weeks ago, and I only hope it has introduced many more to such a fantastic artist. Here’s hoping for more to come in 2025, as Dressner hits the road with Danny & The Champion Of The World, starting in Cardiff on the 12th of March, taking in Leeds, Birmingham and Manchester along the way, and finally finishing in Portsmouth on the 30th. I will try to get there, and I hope you will too.

In addition to the single, Annie Dressner released an official music video for ‘For The Thrill Of It’. You can view the video below or on her YouTube channel.
