AnnaBella – Liar, Liar (2022)

With Anna writing their songs in red ink during late-night writing sessions and Bella performing the songs with raw power and sassiness, AnnaBella is a force to be reckoned with. Based in Vienna, Austria, the female-fronted duo process music in a “naughty and snotty way, but…also very sensitive and fragile.” This is my introduction to the eclectic artist, but AnnaBella has been turning heads with coverage from Send Me Your Ears, Sinusoidal Music and over 30 radio stations across the globe.

Described by The Punk Head as “where modern day taboos meets the allure of gothic rock aesthetic…”, AnnaBella lies somewhere between Halestorm, Evanescence and Dresden Dolls. The obscurity of Amanda Palmer chillingly mixes with Lzzy Hale’s bold vocals in AnnaBella. Yet, while there are these comparisons, AnnaBella has a powerful sound that is distinctive and inimitable.

A great fan of Halestorm and Evanescence, I am almost certain to adore AnnaBella’s sound; however, it is also the lyrical depth that captures my heart. Exploring the status of women in society today, the duo touch on taboos which women normally only talk about behind closed doors. It’s true that women in the 21st century have more freedom than those way back when but there is still an expectation for females “to be silent and happy in every situation” – AnnaBella takes this on in a sophisticated sonic way. Truth be told, if suffrage had a theme song, the chances are it would be one of AnnaBella’s tracks.

Following the well-received ‘Replaced’, ‘Liar, Liar’ adopts a hard-hitting metal baseline with classic rock overtones. Another mesmerising song, ‘Liar, Liar’ looks at the issue of honesty, or rather deception. In a personal narrative executed with exhilarating flair, the song is about being honest or “if you can’t, do it in such a good way that your girl does not find out about it.” Still exploring the theme of female empowerment, ‘Liar, Liar’ is a vulnerable single looking at how things are not what they seem and sometimes not knowing what lies beneath is the better road to follow.
