Anna-Sophie – Breathe (2023)

After reaching the ears of the Global Rockstar team in 2019, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Anna-Sophie has burst onto the music scene with an intriguing new sound. From her debut single ‘Bad Habits’ in 2020 to the most recent single ‘Breathe’ (the one we’re about to take a gander at), the Austrian artist is turning heads and intoxicating audiences across the globe. From features in IGGY Magazine to radio play across Austria and addition to Spotify editorial playlists like ‘Viral 50 Austria’, ‘New Music Friday Germany’ and ‘Dance Brandneu’, Anna-Sophie is on the tips of everyone’s tongues in and beyond Europe.

Following her well-received single ‘Better Off’, Anna-Sophie shifts to another direction with ‘Breathe’. In her earlier material, she brought a poppy EDM style to audiences; however, as of 2023’s ‘Take Control’ we see a heavier rock side to Anna-Sophie. In ‘Breathe’, she establishes this evolution in sound with powerful alternative rock. Interestingly, this new single has a slip of her old pop amidst the pounding drums and crashing guitars.

When I first came across Anna-Sophie and had a listen to her back catalogue, I expected an electropop Miley Cyrus sound. Boy, was I wrong. No one can deny Miley Cyrus is a confident performer with a bold style and presence, but Anna-Sophie takes it one step further. Her brashness is supplemented by a rich boldness offering something powerful with a blunt punk-tinged ferocity. ‘Breathe’ is a melting pot of rock insanity twirling about Anna-Sophie’s vocals swooping you up in an angsty wind before dropping you in an aggressive, chaotic swirl of sound.

While the melody has a heart-stopping, soul-soaring, breath-taking quality, it is Anna-Sophie’s vocals and poetic lyricism that add the gut-wrenching vulnerability. While the madness of ‘Breathe’ could delve into aggressive angst and inner turmoil, the theme is lighter (sort of). Instead of looking at the depths of despair in an intimate situation, Anna-Sophie explores the brightness of falling into a new relationship. Anna-Sophie explains:

“We all know the state when you catch feelings for someone. The butterflies, the excitement, the craving for this person, and suddenly you fall in love… sounds magical, right? But maybe you fall too hard and sometimes it gets really scary. Sometimes you want to stop yourself from falling but then this person is too exciting, and you just dive right in.”

With her cheeky smile, big brown eyes and moving music, Anna-Sophie draws you into a world passionate about life, laughter and love.
