Angus Woodhead – Freedom (2023)
With experience as a singer, songwriter, sound engineer, music producer, composer, arranger, mastering engineer and mixing engineer, it’s fair to say Angus Woodhead has his finger in various music industry pies. Over the past 30 years, he has played all those roles and toured as a musician. He has worked with various international artists, runs his own sound engineering, recording and marketing business, and even mentors aspiring artists. His aim is not to be rich and famous, although that is rather cool, it is to see others succeed and reach their potential. We need more people like that.
25 years ago, Angus Woodhead began releasing music as a solo artist (or that’s what I gather from online searches) with his 1998 debut EP Sweet Memories. Skip ahead a couple of decades and the Australian singer-songwriter brings us his singles ‘Mood Piano’ and ‘Freedom’. Showcasing his skills as a pianist in the instrumental ‘Mood Piano’, Woodhead can send shivers up your spine with a simple piano. In ‘Freedom’, he shifts from classical scores to a hearty country style.
Recorded and produced alongside David Deighton, Misha Gursky and Andrew Mendelson (mastering), ‘Freedom’ is a kaleidoscopic thrill of bold country music. Wrapped in a shimmering sonic wrapper, the melody blends pounding drums with dynamic guitars and a cheeky ukelele flitting through here and there. Swirls of cheerful sounds send you twirling along in a mystic haze. When you add Woodhead’s rich vocals, you feel drawn into a warm embrace.
Penned six years ago, ‘Freedom’ is a rambunctious journey into the optimistic unknown. Woodhead explains that “freedom is that feeling when you get out on the road meeting new people and experiencing new locations”. Freedom is a sense of independence, excitement and thrill of embarking on new journeys. Woodhead captures this sentiment in his empowering, optimistic and heartfelt new single.
