Andy John Jones – Closer (2021)

Literally building his music career from the ground up, Andy John Jones began as a busker in London performing on the streets of Westminster. Spending 12 hours per day in the streets of Westminster, he dealt with everything from overenthusiastic tourists to locals rolling their eyes to unspeakably horrid weather; however, the sleet, rain, and rare sunshine would not dampen Jones’s creativity. With passion, tough skin and some luck, Jones has moved from busker to critically acclaimed musician.

Influenced greatly by Bruce Springsteen, who he happened to skip exams to go see at Glastonbury in 2009, Jones has a highly infectious blues meets funk meets soul with indie-rock undertones. Featured on A&R Factory, Rock and More, Eat This Music, Where The Music Meets and several online radio stations, Jones is reaching audiences on a global scale – and they love it! The latest addition to his engaging discography is the single ‘Closer’.

Coming off the back of his insightful debut album A Night on the Boomtown, ‘Closer’ is a stirring blues/funk tune with a strong dash of soul in the mix. Reminiscent of Paolo Nutini with the guitar stylings of John Mayer, ‘Closer’ is a refreshing breath of boundary-breaking music without being too overwhelming. From the first lyric, Jones has you bopping your head and tapping your toe to the rich, warm melody; however, it is his vocals that add a true sensuality to the track.

As with Paolo Nutini, Jones’s voice has an obscure lilt but the dulcet tones make you weak at the knees. It seems appropriate as ‘Closer’ deals with the wanton pull of a primal sexual relationship, even though it ends in tragedy and disappointment. The silky vocals meld with dynamic instrumentation, including an impressive guitar solo, contribute to the robustness of ‘Closer’ and its infectious, anthemic nature.

Simply put, listening to ‘Closer’ is like having a warm bath surrounded by scented candles and eating a luxurious bar of chocolate at the same time.
