Andrew Flynn – Narcissist (2023)

After meeting a few months ago (six to be precise), singer-songwriter Andrew Flynn and musician Connor Speechly decided to get together and make some music. Not just any music, mind you; music that will leave masses speechless and intoxicate audiences. Despite having only two songs beneath their belt (or at least according to Spotify), the UK-based artist is turning heads far beyond their UK borders. From France to Germany, the UK to the USA, Flynn has been described as captivating, energetic and fascinating. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Narcissist’.

Produced by Connor Speechly in one of Hartlepool’s local studios, ‘Narcissist’ is a nostalgic blast back to the heyday of synth-pop. Growing up during the 1980s, Flynn has a penchant for synth-pop; the “mixture of banging beats and a deep message”. Following his debut single ‘About Love? (Ambient Mix)’, ‘Narcissist’ takes a heavier, harder approach to the synth-driven flickers reminiscent of synth-pop. Interestingly, while electronica drives the song, it is cradled by a softer, intense flood of indie-pop slicing through with Flynn’s bold vocals.

Inspired by the intricacy of human emotion, Andrew Flynn uses his natural storytelling skills to explore life experiences. In ‘Narcissist’ he gathers his experience of a failed romance capturing both the good and bad sides of its coin. Flynn explains:

“This song is informed by my experience of loving a man who was incapable of loving me back. It was deeply traumatic but an experience I learned a huge amount about myself, so not all negative.”

In an intensely intimate way, the poetic lyricism coupled with a vulnerable vocal connects with listeners on a deeper level. Flynn’s voice has a bold underlying tone, but it screams of fragility, melancholic yearning and a dash of rawness cutting to your soul. The thing is, just as there is a glaring line of despair and conflict, hopefulness and empowerment slither through the track. An overall representation of tender tragedy leading to something more powerful – self-discovery and acceptance.

In addition to the single, Andrew Flynn released an official lyric music video for ‘Narcissist’. You can view the video below or via his YouTube channel.
