Andrea Ward – Awake At Night (2022)
Engaging in a sonic dance with her audiences, multi-instrumentalist, dancer, filmmaker and singer-songwriter Andrea Ward intoxicates everyone’s senses with her, well, being herself. Occupying another existential plain, she is a force to be reckoned with and something unlike anything you will have encountered before. This is my introduction to the experimental pop artist, but Ward has been turning heads on an international scale with coverage from Illustrate Magazine, Guitar Girl Mag, Obscure Sound, Less Than 1000 Followers, York Calling, and various other media. The latest addition to her critically acclaimed repertoire is the single ‘Awake At Night’.
Following her track ‘Algorithm’, Andrea Ward adopts an eclectic sound in ‘Awake At Night’. Collaborating with PJ Donahue on percussion, there is a distinctive obscurity in the experimental pop single. Adding an avant-garde element to ‘Awake At Night’, Ward’s vocals seem to carry you along a flowing soundscape navigating a hazy sonic forest…or perhaps a dreamy sonic river. Either way, there is a wistful ambience with whimsical vibes oozing from the track. Interestingly enough, while ‘Awake At Night’ is gentle, an underlying brashness exists in the distorted arrangement like thorns beneath a lush bouquet of roses.
While the melody is intoxicating and can hold its own, Ward’s depth as a musician is enhanced with poetic lyricism. Ward explains that ‘Awake At Night’ “is the idea that you’re awake at night because you know something’s wrong in life. You know that there are forces in the world trying to keep you asleep and you refuse to be any less alive than your greatest potential. It’s as if the song is a roaring voice from your deep subconscious telling you to get up and move…”
In addition to the single, Andrea Ward released an official music video for ‘Awake At Night’. You can view the video below or on her YouTube channel.
