Andi – Giving Up (2021)

Andi, also known as Amy Kelly, is just stepping out on her own as a solo artist. Yet, Andi (or Amy) is also well known among the music circles in Ireland’s capital Dublin. She led the Dublin band The Stoney Brokes under her own name and was a background vocalist for a number of Ireland acts, including The Hot Sprockets, This Other Kingdom, Brona Keogh, Haokah, and Vernon Jane.

Amy took the Andi moniker in 2019, starting out as an acoustic two-piece and then gathering selected musicians to form a full-fledged band. The result was the first single ‘Hermit.’ After the chaos of 2020, the first pandemic year, Andi started preparing her EP, Cedar Ward. Not a lightweight release, Cedar Ward is based on different facets of mental health. Having grown up visiting hospital wards and clinics from an early age Amy created a fictional and non-fictional creative space to deal with past and present trauma. After ‘Housewife’, released in February 2021, Andi is now sharing ‘Give Up’ – another single from the new EP.

According to Amy, the song was written at a time of self-doubt. She had doubts about whether to pursue music and let her inner thoughts sabotage her music career. Listening to the song, you can connect Amy’s inner feelings and doubts. Starting out as a slow-burner, it develops into a full-fledged rocker Pearl Jam would be proud of. The centrepiece of the song though is Amy’s truly powerful vocals that fully reflect all the tumultuous thoughts about mental health. Yet, if Amy has any doubts about whether she should do music, she shouldn’t. She’s got talent many other artists could only dream of.
