Andi Fins – You Need A Friend (2024)
A few years ago, we came across singer-songwriter Andi Fins with his 2019 single ‘Stan’s Copycat’, but he had been entertaining the masses for several years before. For over a decade, Berlin-based Fins has explored the wide spectrum of life intricately expressing existential challenges. He likens his songs to “the missing chapters of life’s unwritten book” in a reflective, eclectic, innovative and original way. Concocting a cinematic mix of folk, pop, funk, psychedelia, and even electronic flourishes, this talented artist defies genres while clinging to a signature sound. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘You Need A Friend’.
Following his well-received singles ‘i want i want’ and ‘Lost and Blue’, Andi Fins offers listeners an obscure combination of folk, psychedelia and indie-rock in ‘You Need A Friend’. Self-recorded and produced, ‘You Need A Friend’ has the rawness expected of a DIY production but sophistication and maturity glean across the off-kilter single. A fusion of clipped percussion, bold bass, dynamic guitars and pulsating drums leans toward conventional melodies; however, a strange oddness exists in an experimental symphony.
It’s rather difficult to describe, and this might be what makes ‘You Need A Friend’ so intriguing. Instead of lilting toward something singular and typical, Fins presents melodic diversity in ‘You Need A Friend’. Not only a melting pot of genres but rather the emotions and sentiments portrayed through each sound. Old-fashioned folksy rock grates on one side, but psychedelic charm shimmers down the other like one style or sound wrapped in another. Slightly disconcerting, ‘You Need A Friend’ has a haunting eeriness with bold warmth hanging to its heavy though light-hearted tone.
One aspect I find interesting about ‘You Need A Friend’ is how the melody influences the lyrics and vice versa. Looking at the intricacies of friendship in an increasingly artificial world, Andi Fins’s song is an ode to real friends. He explains: “In the midst of shimmering progress, the robots are left to their own… celebrating the magic of friendship, you turn words into a gift. The best thing that artificiality has produced so far is the magic of the real; I’m pretty sure that you are real.”
