An Awkward Social – Once It’s Over (2022)

Being South African and dealing with musicians from across the globe, I do tend to be a little more excited when coming across a South African artist. It’s a patriotism thing, I think, but I always grin when someone from South Africa pours a little bit of their talent onto my virtual desk. This time the artist is An Awkward Social.

The brainchild of singer-songwriter Franco Bolleurs, An Awkward Social has been releasing music for the past five years (give or take). In 2018 he released his debut EP The Art of Dreaming sharing an eclectic merging of hip hop, pop and rock. Several years later, he has traversed different styles and ‘Once It’s Over’ is the sophisticated evolution of his musicality. Obscure and unique, there are elements of electropop, dream pop and hip hop in the melodic arrangement. Bringing a brashness of contemporary pop in the beats and synths, one can play this at any party and have people dancing to its upbeat nature. The thing is, while it has a soothing quality it also has a palpable grittiness to the track.

Focused primarily on the melody, the electronic arrangement blows you away; however, An Awkward Social’s vocals enhance the gritty aspect of ‘One It’s Over’. The interspersed almost spoken vocal execution tiptoes across the melody dropping itself in the arrangement every now and then. A haunting effect, but one quite appropriate for the ethereal tune and message. An Awkward Social explains that ‘One It’s Over’ is “…about losing your grip on what you perceive as reality”, and you could definitely lose your way with this dynamic track.
