Amy Hopwood – Fire and Fury (2025)

A student of folklore, social anthropology, philosophy, and psychology, Amy Hopwood dissects situations from all perspectives looking at the past, present and future in each issue. Tackling difficult themes of the day, including uncertain societies, the UK-based singer-songwriter is unafraid to delve into the provocative, tumultuous and grittier sides of life. This is our introduction to Hopwood, but she is already a known name in the folk music scene featuring on international radio stations, publications, and performing at international folk shows. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Fire and Fury’.

Following her well-received 2024 single, ‘All Shall Be Well’, ‘Fire and Fury’ adopts a vintage folk sound bound in a simplistic soundscape. The thing is, as much as the instrumentation shimmers with a barebones style, the separate elements connect in harmonic unison. Individual but entwined, there is a slide of guitars, drums, and even whistling alongside Hopwood’s vocals making everything whole and weighty.

If you think you recognise the tune, you’re not wrong. Using the American Civil War song, ‘When Johnny Comes Marching Home’, each beat is a proud, brazen pulsating call to arms. Even more intriguingly, the use of this popular chant makes ‘Fire and Fury’ the ideal theme song for… well, not necessarily another war, but a definite protest song to enflame the spirit of change in your heart. Hopwood explains:

“’Fire and Fury’ uses a traditional melody to talk about modern concerns. Specifically, the rise in fascism… ’Fire and Fury’ is based on my conviction that the time for “niceness” is long past and that those of us who fear a new era of fascism must now be stronger, tougher, and more decisive. It’s a call to action with marching drums, mouth trumpet, whistling and a rousing chorus.”

In addition to her single, Amy Hopwood released an official lyric video for ‘Fire and Fury’. You can view the video below and/or on her YouTube channel.
