Amy Correa Bell – Run It (2022)

There are a lot of restrictions that society places on us, whether we are aware of them or not. However, there comes a time when you look to overcome the cage you have been placed in. At these times, you need to listen to ‘Run It’ by Amy Correa Bell which is an anthemic war cry mixed in with some nostalgic introspection. The perfect track to play on those late-night introspections, it brings forth memories of ancestors, while building the strength to overcome the struggle you currently face.

Working with her brother Les Les who produced the track, Bell combines vintage drums with futuristic synths to merge the past and present into the light that leads to the future. This single continues the emotional vulnerability of Bell’s music while tapping into some rather personal struggles. With lyrics that speak of survival, the single is a great taster for her upcoming album.

The progressive synths that fill the opening of ‘Run It’ are packed with potential. The vintage beats that enter from below have an earthy and grounded feeling that throws your mind back in time. There is a wonderful blending of past and present through the initial melodic line as the different layers dance around each other. This dance turns into a delicate thread of light that leads you into the introspective vibes of the single. It is a really rich soundscape that is equal parts delicate and powerful. It is like you can feel the steely strength that rests under the soft wrapping of the music, waiting to be unleashed. Against this movement, there is a vulnerability that is lightly touched on, but this only seems to increase the strength of the underlying emotions.

Bell’s vocals ride the progressive synths into your brain, bringing lyrics that call for freedom. There is a touch of yearning for escapism in the lyrics which transforms into the struggle against the cage society locks you in. At times, her performance is packed with the feeling of looking out and wishing only to be brought back to the reality of the chains holding you back. As the backing vocals bring an ancestral call of power to the track, this feeling changes into a war cry of power. Through this change, you are filled with the strength to break the bars of the cage you are in, while understanding how the past affects the present and future. It is a very powerful single that brings a number of messages to light, if you take the time to really listen.

Using earthy vintage beats, the call of your ancestors and the power of moving forward, Amy Correa Bell has you breaking the bars of the cage you find yourself in through ‘Run It’. The melody has a touch of nostalgia through the beats that blur into a push toward the future and the steely strength of resolve. Bell’s vocal performance carries the power of generations as it carries the strength and resilience of the past into the strength of the future.
