Ampersand – Bones (2021)

Five-piece band Ampersand is taking cues from the past and moulding them into a modern and distinctive sound with their debut ‘Bones’. While the band does not shy away from the influences of the past, they are able to craft relatable and modern tones that draw out the best elements of traditional sounds. Mixing folk, rock, classical and jazz, they will have you eager for their upcoming debut album.

The fusion of sound comes from Mark Young (vocals, guitar, piano), Tom Campbell (bass), Adam Williams (drums), Tom Stone (guitar) and Georgina Melling (violin, synths). Having met at Royal Holloway University, their collaboration focused on the songs Young had written. When lockdown hit, they took the opportunity to record their music and prepare for their debut album.

‘Bones’ draws you in with a touch of 60s surf-pop as the vocals hum through the soundscape. This gives way to Young’s voice which holds this tender thread. There is a wonderful easiness to his performance that you rest back into and allow to draw you where it will. While gentle, there is a lot packed into the lyrics that sink into your brain and sway around. His performance helps you work through everything in the lyrics as he draws you through an almost conversational flow.

While you float in Young’s vocals, the melody really does bring the best of the past to your ears while moving to something more contemporary. Each instrument adds a decadent layer to the melody that makes you think of rich tones and warm days. At times, you can hear the different influences shining through only for them to slide into something new. The melodic arrangement also enhances the vibes of the vocals. There is an instrumental interlude that is wonderful to listen to that mixes with the backing vocals for a rich sound.

Ampersand creates a lush soundscape drawing out the best elements of various genres and influences for their debut single ‘Bones’. Young’s vocals create an easy and soft layer that you sink into as you work through the lyrics. The melody enhances the vibe of the vocals while creating a further depth to the soundscape.
