AMONG THE MASSES – Utopia (2023)
Bonding over their mutual love for bands like Radiohead, Pink Floyd, The Cure and Depeche Mode, Swedish foursome AMONG THE MASSES bring a sound that is contemporary but with an 80s flavour. Releasing music since 2017 (or at least according to Spotify), the lads have and are turning heads across the globe. Not only is their electric music captivating audiences but it has some critics grinning as well. Critically acclaimed by numerous publications, such as Sinusoidal Music and Thoughts Words Actions, AMONG THE MASSES is quickly becoming a highly recommended rock band on an international scale.
Following their 2018 single ‘Groundhog Day’, AMONG THE MASSES’ single ‘Utopia’ (released in 2020) is their return after a two-year absence from releasing music. An evolution in their music, ‘Utopia’ inspires a new sound for the Swedish group. When compared to previous material, the lads experiment with a heavily electronic tone, unlike the indie-rock sound we became accustomed to. Retaining the signature nostalgia of their melodies, AMONG THE MASSES tap into old-school synth-pop and post-punk leaning toward Depeche Mode.
The single appears to have light-hearted sentiments but it is more the mystical charm that captivates me. A kaleidoscopic combination of keyboards and guitars exists building an elegant swirl of sound. Yet, while there is sophistication in the production (thanks to award-winning producer Andreas Ahlenius), a wistful innocence can be heard through David Liebe’s magical vocals.
Enchanting, entrancing and utterly intoxicating, AMONG THE MASSES carry listeners through a soft haze of music. David Liebe sings about reaching utopia and I think it’s clear that this song is our utopia.
