Amanda Brecker – Wrong Again (2023)

The apple never falls far from the tree – it’s an age-old saying that can have both bad and good connotations. In the case of Amanda Brecker, it’s a good one. The daughter of trumpeter Randy Brecker and pianist Eliane Elias, as well as the niece of legendary saxophonist Michael Brecker, Amanda Brecker inherited oodles of natural talent. The thing is, just as she has an innate passion for music with natural skill, it is her releases that prove she is one to stand out as a powerful original artist in a pool of artists. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Wrong Again’.

Inspired by love, Brecker sent us reeling to a sublime state of bliss when she met the man of her dreams in ‘Man Of My Dreams’. With ‘Wrong Again’, she flips the coin exposing the complexity of not-so-happy relationships. Joined by long-time collaborator Daniel Jakubovic, ‘Wrong Again’ explores the murkiness of unrequited love. Jakubovic explains:

“It’s a song about having a fantastic bubble with someone… being in love with them and being absolutely sure they feel the same about you due to the obvious connection and vibe you both create, but when you say how you feel you get the opposite, so it all explodes in your face…”

Taken from her full-length album Dreams, set for release on November 3rd, ‘Wrong Again’ presents Brecker’s mixture of vintage sound with a contemporary flair. In ‘Man Of My Dreams’, she hit us with a blast of 2000s pop-rock; however, ‘Wrong Again’ drags us back to the 80s with a pop-infused tune. Yet, a stronger rock beat pulsates in the soundscape settling ‘Wrong Again’ effortlessly alongside Journey and Madonna but with a modern-day indie-pop vibe.

While there are some comparisons made, I have to reiterate that Amanda Brecker is original, authentic and genuine in her style. ‘Wrong Again’ captures the bold hope of a willing heart in the moving synths but the crash of guitars and drums in the chorus slams us to the reality of being rejected. Brecker’s warm, rich vocals simultaneously inspire a positive desire to profess one’s love; however, the frustration, angst and melancholy lingers beneath. It’s an oscillation between light and dark, bright and dull, euphoria and utter desperation – everything intricately woven and bound by human vulnerability and fragility.
