Alla Igityan – Gay Crush (2024)
Finding the harmonic line between musical creativity and technical practicality, Alla Igityan is a software engineer by day and a musician by night (and over the weekend). Discovering her passion for music as a child, Igityan learned to play the violin and took vocal lessons embracing the need for creative expression. Today the embers of that passionate fire still burn as Armenian-born Igityan relocated to Germany continuing her musical journey. Skip ahead from the move in 2019 to now and Igityan is a part of a large music community in Berlin releasing original songs. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Gay Crush’.
A natural storyteller and poetic lyricist, Igityan aspires to touch the hearts of her audiences and create solace through her intimate compositions. Following the well-received singles ‘Picture’ and ‘Games’, ‘Gay Crush’ is an intimate, vulnerable song with youthful playfulness. Filled with the innocence of toe-tapping folk-pop, ‘Gay Crush’ showcases the beauty of acoustic music – no need for bells and whistles to wrap listeners in an intoxicating haze of sound. Combining folk-inspired guitar with charming percussion, a harmonic wave of music washes over you with light-hearted whimsy and delight.
While the melody is a rush of heart-warming comfort, the lyricism is what makes me grin. On one hand, Igityan explores the complexities of love; on the other, ‘Gay Crush’ brims with simplistic cheer. Igityan explains:
“This fun and playful song is about having a crush on a gay man (as a straight woman) and enjoying the safety and fun of the experience, even though it’s unreciprocated.”
Sophisticated but innocent, naïve and childlike, Alla Igityan’s ‘Gay Crush’ is a happy song of joy and frivolity. Add her dulcet vocals and I can imagine her twirling about in a field of flowers with a grin on her face – or at least that’s in line with the fresh optimism her song conveys.
In addition to the single, Igityan released an official lyrics video for ‘Gay Crush’. You can view the video below and on her YouTube channel.
