All Poets & Heroes – Colorful Lungs (2022)

Describing themselves as an “indie art-rock band”, US-based duo All Poets & Heroes draw together the sounds of Radiohead and Jeff Buckley with tinges of Death Cab For Cutie. While this is my introduction to the pair, Rob McCall and Corey Jordan are already gaining a loyal following with their engaging performances. Opening for acts like Maybird, The Stolen and the Sam Roberts Band, the lads jumped into the NY music scene. With this jump, they landed themselves headlining notable festivals and going on tour over the past few years.

Alright, so now we have a basic idea of who they are, their influences and their presence, we can get down to business. As I mentioned, this is my introduction to All Poets & Heroes, and I cannot believe I haven’t heard of them before. This is not because I live in New York (which I don’t), but because their music is so hypnotic that once you hear it, you’re hooked. One of the most recent tracks added to their well-received discography is ‘Colorful Lungs’.

Taken off their two-part EP Colorful Lungs (the first part already released), ‘Colorful Lungs’ incorporate poetic lyrics into a heartfelt melody. Driven by multi-instrumentalist Corey Jordan’s guitar (or potentially Rob McCall’s guitar), the single takes you on a journey of self-discovery in its melodic arrangement. While the drums and guitar combination are softer, smoother, but just as poignant during the verses, there is a movement into a more infectious, louder and “hyped” chorus. Add Rob McCall’s strong vocals and you have an enchanting tune that leaves you twirling about in its kaleidoscopic melody.

While the melody can hold its own as it slithers into your brain and intoxicates you, it is the meaning behind the single that showcases All Poets & Heroes’ depth as a band. Connecting with audiences on an intimate level, the song explores Imposter Syndrome using a personal narrative. McCall explains that “lyrically, this song talks about Imposter Syndrome – the idea that we aren’t worthy or good enough, but the people around us see us from an entirely different perspective. Often they see the greatness we can’t ever fully embrace because we haven’t embraced it ourselves.”

Navigating human fragility and complexity, All Poets & Heroes’ ‘Colorful Lungs’ is brutally honest, genuine and hard-hitting in its sensitive way.
