Alice June – The Right Way (2023)
While singer-songwriter Alice June’s discography only heads back to 2021 (according to Spotify), June has been entertaining audiences with her moving music for a much longer time. Embracing her passion for music, June began playing roles in local theatre musical productions before heading from the small town to the bright lights of Milan. With notable gigs and her confident stage presence, her performances made her an exciting up-and-coming artist in the Italian city. Today, we’re jumping into her critically acclaimed repertoire with the single ‘The Right Way’.
Listening to Alice June’s music is a first for me but she has been turning heads across the globe for some time. Rave reviews ooze from international publications, audiences indulge at shows and on streaming sites, and radio stations play her songs for all to hear. An Italian artist, we might consider Italian to be heard in the songs; however, June leans toward English showcasing her innovation, originality and influence of other cultures.
Following her well-received tracks ‘City Vibes’ and ‘Flow’, ‘The Right Way’ is June’s first release in 2023. Similar to ‘City Vibes’, elegance flows through ‘The Right Way’ with delicacy. Yet, despite the delicate fragility, this is merely a surface view covering something heavier, harder and more powerful beneath – a sound that comes through with guttural ferocity.
Recorded and produced between Italy and London by a team of international musicians and producers, then mastered in the USA by multi-Grammy award-winning sound engineers, ‘The Right Way’ shows a mature sophistication in its arrangement. Intimate fairy-like tones float atop a forceful rock sound creating a disconnect between light and dark; then it all merges in a heart-breaking harmonic whole capturing the vulnerable melancholy but powerful empowerment of the theme. June explains:
“It’s an introspective love song which lets the listener enter into a deeper and deeper connection with the lyrics and the music after every listening. The core theme of the song is the mix of emotions we feel at the beginning of a new relationship which brings us to a new discovery of ourselves and to see ourselves from another perspective.”
