Alffa – Dance Again (2024)

North Wales duo Alffa have once again proven their mettle with the release of ‘Dance Again’, the third single from their highly anticipated sophomore album, O’r Lludw / From Ashes. Since bursting onto the scene with their debut album and the record-breaking single ‘Gwenwyn’, which was the first Welsh language song to surpass 1 million streams on Spotify, Alffa have navigated through personal challenges and a global pandemic, emerging stronger and more determined than ever.

‘Dance Again’ marks a departure from Alffa’s signature punk-infused hard rock style, instead embracing a pure punk aesthetic reminiscent of SOFT PLAY’s most recent work. The track strips away any excess, leaving only the raw essentials: Sion Eifion Land’s relentless percussion and Dion Wyn Jones’ aggressive guitar work and guttural vocals. This pared-back approach creates a blistering soundscape that serves as the perfect backdrop for the song’s message of resilience.

Despite its thunderous delivery, ‘Dance Again’ carries a surprisingly hopeful message. The lyrics use the metaphor of dancing in the rain to represent overcoming life’s challenges subverting punk’s typically bleak narratives. This juxtaposition of furious instrumentation with empowering lyrics showcases Alffa’s growth as songwriters and their ability to convey complex emotions within the constraints of the punk genre. In this respect, Alffa draws comparisons to the acclaimed IDLES, known for their ability to blend aggressive punk sounds with socially conscious and uplifting messages. However, where IDLES often tackle broader societal issues, Alffa’s focus seems more personal, exploring individual resilience in the face of adversity.

Discussing the track, Alffa explains, “By choosing to embrace the challenges symbolised by the rain, the act of dancing becomes a powerful release, alleviating the emotional strain and renewing one’s spirit. This song stands out as a pivotal piece on the album, encapsulating the overarching theme of finding strength and solace in difficult times.”

‘Dance Again’ offers an exciting glimpse into what fans can expect from O’r Lludw / From Ashes, set for release on November 29th. Produced by Gethin Pearson, the album promises to be a bilingual masterpiece that translates years of personal turmoil into a message of hope. With this release, Alffa seem poised to transcend the Welsh-language scene and make their mark on the international stage, living up to the phoenix-like rebirth suggested by their album’s title.
