Alexia Vegas – At First (2024)

For Etta James, it was “At Last”; for Alexia Vegas, it is “At First” – both masterpieces swimming through the intricacy of romance. Inspired by humanity in its totality, the 24-year-old Vegas tackles the good, the bad, the gritty, the joyful, the dark and the delightful sides of life. With a penchant for navigating a well of romantic relationships, Vegas’ songs resonate with audiences in brutal honesty and engaging melodies. Her music has been described as “masterpieces disguised as infectious pop tunes…”, so come with us as we jump into one of these intoxicating pieces.

Following her well-received singles ‘Feel This Way’ and ‘Burn’, the US-based singer-songwriter steps into 2024 with ‘At First’. Her 2023 tunes have you travelling along a dreamy sonic river covered in wistful fog, however ‘At First’ lies beyond sharp rocks leading to crashing waves with intense clarity shoving the rapids. The bold beats punctuate a melodic pop tune giving that tumultuous tone, but it is Vegas’ rich vocals that make the song a story.

An evolution in her sound, Vegas shifts from ethereal whimsy to confident enthusiasm in ‘At First’. Interestingly, while the melody is bright, powerful and commanding, there is an underlying layer of subdued chaos. A crash of traditional pop with electronic slips, ‘At First’ has the tumultuous butterflies in the tummy effect while appearing entirely comfortable in the contented experience of love. Vegas explains:

“People in love often say that they were destined to be together. In my latest song… a girl recalls how her one-night stand turned into a passionate and enduring romance in which she and her new boyfriend are “calling each other sweetheart, kissing under the stars, and walking down the streets just holding hands.” In the end, she observes that “life takes unexpected turns” and, though still a bit cynical about her whirlwind romance she sings “If we were destined to be brought together – so, we’ll go with that!”
