Alexa Lash – Missing (2024)
Earlier this month, singer-songwriter Alexa Lash wriggled into our brains with her “anthem for the anxious woman” ‘Fuck That Noise’. This was our introduction to Lash, and from that moment on we have watched her with eagerness – not stalking the lady, that’s just weird. Intimate, emotional, honest and brimming with raw genuineness, US-based Lash’s melodies resonate with listeners on a more profound level while keeping a certain degree of playfulness lingering in the tune. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Missing’.
Continuing her walk into 2024, ‘Missing’ is the second single released by this songstress. A natural storyteller, her poetic lyrics weave about and caress you with comfortable caring while heading off on an exciting journey. In ‘Fuck That Noise’, Lash read a letter to society speaking for the fragile, vulnerable but frustrated modern-day woman. In ‘Missing’, she checks into societal relationships once again; this time on a more intricate and personal level. Penned as a tale of childhood but with an intense psychological twist, Lash tackles deeper emotions linked to difficult situations. She explains:
“I wanted the song to feel simple, while the words feel weighty, heavy. I want you to experience something listening to it. Like you’re a child. Like you can understand where the narrator is coming from…The child grows up, realises there’s been so much distance it might not be reparable. It’s grief for the childhood that you didn’t know you lost.”
While the melody is not reminiscent of Suzanne Vega’s ‘Luka’, the sentiment lingering in the lyricism brings the same sense of pain, heartache and vulnerability. Spoken from the perspective of a narrator instead of first-person, ‘Missing’ is a moving story told with Jeff Buckley-esque haunting.
Recorded at Florida’s Shack North studios with Ferny Coipel (who happens to play the accompanying accordion), ‘Missing’ uses a simplistic acoustic arrangement to execute a kaleidoscopic rollercoaster of emotion. Lash’s obscure vocals meld with a wistful acoustic guitar enhancing the rawness of the theme. Moreover, while the gentle tone is calming, its gentleness and calm manner oozes a painful desperation lurking in the background of our minds.
