Alex Slay ft Clover Jamez – Marathon (2022)

There are times when we feel that everything we do is not working, leading to a sense of hopelessness. If you feel yourself sliding into this negativity, Alex Slay is here with some smooth summer vibes in ‘Marathon’. Touching on the feeling of nothing working, he looks past the momentary emotion and considers that the journey is as important as the destination.

Bringing an optimistic message, he lets us know that if you enjoy what you are doing by going your own way, you are actually where you want to be. Continuing to work with Clover Jamez, the duo blend RnB and pop into the incredibly thoughtful lyrics Slay unleashes. After his career took off following a talent show, Slay has toured on cruise ships, before pushing the envelope on Nashville’s budding RnB scene.

‘Marathon’ has a lazy summer heat to the opening that makes you think about relaxing by the pool or on the beach, as the warm air settles on your skin. This laziness weaves between some clapping RnB beats and glittering shimmers that bring a wash of colours to the soundscape. You can easily sink into the smooth summer vibes of the music and let it pick up the load that rests on your shoulders. Giving you a moment away from the worries of the world, the melody puts you in the perfect place to really think about the message of the track. While the melody is relatively understated, there is a great movement to it that propels you into the vibes of the track.

Against the warmth of the melody, Slay’s smooth RnB vocals slide across your skin like a cool breeze. There is something rather infectious about his performance that makes you pause and take the time to listen to what he has to say. Through the lyrics, he considers reaching for your dreams and feeling like you are never going to get there. As you head into the chorus, the message starts to change and you are invited to consider the journey, instead of where you want to be. This perfectly leads into the chorus that lets you know reaching your destination is a marathon and not a sprint. Jamez’s vocals bring a bop to the flow of the single, which is a wonderful transition from the smoothness of Slay. His message is no less impactful and reaches out to pull you further into the thoughtfulness of the single.

Smooth summer heat brings an important message through the thoughtful lyrics and engaging sounds of ‘Marathon’, blending the musicality of Alex Slay and Clover Jamez. The melody slides with warm summer tones that lift the weight from your shoulders. The vocals impart a thoughtful message that many of us need to hear.
