Alex Kate – Lost In You (2022)

Compared to Kate Bush by notable blogs Send Me Your Ears and Sinusoidal Music, singer-songwriter Alex Kate has a toe-tingling sound that is “…superbly executed across the spectrum.” One of the more interesting new artists in the UK, Kate has reached audiences across the globe with her ethereal music, and there is no sight of her stopping any time soon. Inspired by the sounds and culture of the 70s and 80s, Alex Kate’s poetic lyricism and vintage style take modern-day audiences back a few decades. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Lost In You’.

Following her critically acclaimed track ‘Don’t Hold Back’, ‘Lost In You’ finds that balance between contemporary pop and 80s indie-folk. Ethereal vocals are slathered atop an enchanting melodic arrangement of drums, synths and guitars; however, while it is highly textured, the merging brings all elements together in a harmonic sonic tube. Alright, the sonic tube thing might not be the best way to describe ‘Lost In You’, but what I’m getting at is how you are engulfed in a kaleidoscopic swirl of sound. Yes, that’s better.

Considering the highs, lows and dreamy effects of ‘Lost In You’, it is easy to fall into a hazy ambience, but the dreaminess belies a far more profound message. ‘Lost In You’ was penned after Alex Kate finished watching a murder mystery programme and some of that haunting seems to have slipped into the song. She explains, “you wouldn’t think that a programme about murders would inspire such a love song…you never know when creative moments will hit…” When working with producer Daniel Newcombe on the single, she shares that “…he created the ethereal dreamscape that I knew I was looking for that reflected the utter abandonment to love.”

So, what is my overall verdict of Alex Kate’s ‘Lost In You’? Sincere, charming, sentimental, laidback and soothing, it has a relaxing effect, and you can certainly lose yourself in it.
