Alex Goupil – The First Time (2023)

Since his school years, Canadian singer-songwriter Alex Goupil immersed himself in music. It all began when he started jamming with friends in his parents’ basement; however, while the group turned the heads of local music fans, it went nowhere (at least not as a full band). Friends went off to university, but Goupil knew his path was music. In 2018, he moved from Canada to the UK and began his career as a solo artist releasing his first single. From then on, he has turned heads on an international scale (our head included) with various well-received songs. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘The First Time’.

We discovered Alex Goupil through his single ‘Letting Go’ in 2021 as he captured the complex emotions of having to leave loved ones in a folk-pop melody. Now, he looks at the other side of love exploring the complex feelings of meeting a new special someone in ‘The First Time’. Goupil explains that ‘The First Time’ “is my 9th single and is a chill acoustic song that was written about the feeling of falling in love with someone new…”

Following the single ‘Falling Apart’, Goupil moves from an electronic-tinged pop sound to something softer, soothing and folk-inspired in ‘The First Time’. Lying somewhere between Tom Odell and Ed Sheeran but with a distinctive obscurity to his vocals, this talented artist effortlessly captures your heart with the new song. Interestingly, most of Goupil’s work has the charming love ballad essence but ‘The First Time’ appears to be more heartfelt and soul-stirring. I’m not entirely sure how it is more soul-stirring; it’s just a feeling. Perhaps it is Goupil’s unique ability to carry you off on a sonic cloud lost in a whimsical haze of kaleidoscopic sound.

As mentioned, ‘The First Time’ is an acoustic song dedicated to falling in love with someone new and he captures the theme perfectly. Soft vocals atop a simplistic guitar make for a mellifluous setting while Goupil pours out his heart in a besotted way. It is a brilliantly “chill tune” made for relaxing playlists, but it is also that song to stick in the back of your head that you’re happy to hum at any time.
