Alex Frew – Antisocial Love Song (2020)

Hailing from Toronto, Canada, Alex Frew is just another 18-year-old dealing with adolescent angst and the confusing issues associated with “coming of age”. The difference between Alex Frew and his peers is the record deal with Warner Music Canada, breakout singles and being called a “succinct burst of emotions” from Coup de Main. The latest addition to his repertoire is the single ‘Antisocial Love Song’.

The follow-up to his critically acclaimed debut single ‘Get Out Alive’, ‘Antisocial Love Song’ is another powerful pop ballad oozing passion and raw honesty. When Frew first wrote ‘Antisocial Love Song’, it was a glimpse into the frustration people are feeling during lockdown. Little did he know how relevant it would become as the events of 2020 unfolded.

“This song is very important to me. It took on new meaning after this global pandemic occurred. It wears its pop music qualities on its sleeve, but touches on the difficulty of being alone and finding connections with others – a feeling which has only been amplified by the world’s current situation.” – Alex Frew on ‘Antisocial Love Song’

Pivoting between a desire to be alone and the longing for a relationship, Frew brings awareness to this aggravating, agitating and confusing indecisiveness. Lyrically, the single takes a poignant stance questioning these emotions and the pit of confusion in which it throws you. However, it is not the lyrics that make the song…I mean, lyrics are important but it is the arrangement of instrumentation and vocals that are beguiling.

Lying somewhere between The 1975, Interpol and Khalid, Frew’s pop ballad is dynamic and moving. The collaboration with pop singer A Is For Arrows and incorporation of her vocals brings further meaning and sincerity in their tête-à-tête. In ‘Antisocial Love Song’, Frew has found the delicate balance between disarming and heartwarming. Melodic, endearing and anthemic, ‘Antisocial Love Song’ might be considered a theme song for people feeling these feelings while living in quarantine.
