Alex Dante – Not Again (2021)
If you are looking for some solace from the emotional storm that has been the last year, Alex Dante is here for you. With his single ‘Not Again’, he offers a moment of peace in the collective emotional exhaustion we have faced and the understanding that we are not alone. Drawing on some of his frustrations in adolescence and the emotional rollercoaster of the pandemic, he has crafted a turbulent soundscape that puts you at ease.
While listeners might know Dante from Code Silver, his solo work taps into his life experiences outside of the band. Playing most of the instruments on the single himself, he has the help of Josh Grattan on drums to finish things off.
‘Not Again’ wastes no time thrumming into your brain with a foot-tapping beat and addictive guitar line. The music pulls you along the verses for a burst of sound on the chorus. Dante has taken some of the best elements of pop-punk and woven them together for an infectious soundscape. The thrumming of the guitar combines with the drums to make you move your head to them. The crash of music on the chorus makes you want to jump around. All of this bolsters the vocals that edge on the anthemic. There are also these moments when the guitars really shine as they subtly call to you in the background.
Dante’s vocals enter from the very start to fill you with the emotions of the track. His performance draws the frustrations we have all felt to the front of your brain only to counter this with the weary fatigue of the last year. While tapping into his own emotions, there is a universality to the feeling that makes the song easy to connect with. The lyrics match the melody with the best bits of pop-punk styling. The chorus makes you want to yell out with it while you jump around.
Alex Dante connects with the collective frustration we have felt in the last year while pulsing some pop-punk goodness into your veins with ‘Not Again’. There is an infectious energy to the music that combines with the vocals to get you rocking out to his sound. Dante’s vocals bring every emotion we have felt over the last year bubbling up while letting us know that we are not alone in feeling this way.
