Alec Berlin – What I Wish I Had Said (2022)

With over two decades of musical experience under his belt, US-based Alec Berlin has a portfolio that is not only impressive but intriguing. Upon his move to New York City, after completing a Masters Degree in Jazz Performance at Boston’s New England Conservatory, Berlin began making waves and building a name for himself. Now an established name performing on Broadway (The Lion King, Green Day’s American Idiot, Rent, etc.), appearing on television shows (The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Good Morning America, etc.), and sharing a stage with iconic artists like Elton John, James Taylor and Kenny Wheeler, Berlin is quite a dude.

Alongside his other musical projects, Berlin pursued a solo career releasing his original jazz album Crossing Paths. This was followed by two more records where he showcased his versatility beyond jazz. The latest addition to his discography is his EP What I Wish I Had Said, and we’re taking a gander at the title track.

Featured on various international press and radio stations, ‘What I Wish I Had Said’ is reaching global audiences – but it’s not just any old song. Following his four-track EP Iota (Not One), the new EP is a combination of various genres ranging from blues to classic rock. ‘What I Wish I Had Said’ has an old-school rock with sprinkles of modern-day pop-rock infused in the melody.

An instrumental piece, Berlin showcases how a pure melody can be as effective as any song with bold vocals. In fact, this track may be one of the richest and boldest I have heard in a while. The combination of drums and guitars makes for a heart-pounding melody; however, each element appears to have its own spot in the track. It’s like each instrument has a voice and there is an interesting conversation within the interplay of guitars.

From hard-hitting tones to a smooth, gentle and soothing pop-inspired guitar, ‘What I Wish I Had Said’ is a song to play in every setting. If you are looking for something laidback or a bit heavier, Alec Berlin is there with this outstanding track.
