Aldís Fjóla – Burn (2022)
From the age of 16, singer-songwriter Aldís Fjóla has been creating music and performing with various bands across Iceland. Now, she takes time to step back, look at her life and work on a solo expression of her reality. Using music as a catharsis to confront personal traumas, Fjóla’s sound has been described as dramatic, dark and beautiful. Featured in Rock Era Magazine, Lost In The Manner, Sinusoidal Music, Less Than 1000 Followers, and various playlists, Fjóla is moving beyond her native Iceland to reach global audiences. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Burn’.
Taken off her well-received debut album Shadows (released in 2020), ‘Burn’ adopts a dark, melancholic tinge within a heavy, melodic metal sound. Lying somewhere between Skunk Anansie and Alanis Morisette, Aldís Fjóla effortlessly intoxicates you from the first chord. It is difficult to describe ‘Burn’ and Fjóla’s sound overall, but I’ll do my best. ‘Burn’ is, as I mentioned, dark and melancholic leaving you in a haunting sonic mist. As the song progresses, this talented artist’s obscure vocals add a hypnotic vibe to the track as Fjóla takes you by the hand guiding you into darkness.
Although you can feel the almost palpable intense intimacy in ‘Burn’, there is also a light hopefulness in the lyricism. Fjóla explains that ‘Burn’ is a “conversation with myself about how we always beat ourselves down and how to find your own path when everyone has an opinion about what you should do.” It is this personal narrative that allows Fjóla to connect with audiences on a deeper level.
So, what do I think of Fjóla and ‘Burn’? I could say the single is awesome, outstanding, spectacular, brilliant or even magnificent. The fact is that none of these adjectives truly describe the poetic sophistication and elegance of ‘Burn’. I can’t wait for Aldís Fjóla’s upcoming album.
