Alba – Child of the Stars (2021)
There is a lot of hatred in the world and damage being done that could cause people to lose faith in humanity. Alba has picked up on this loss of faith and turned it into the compelling story of ‘Child of the Stars’. Telling the tale of a little girl who has lost faith, the single touches on topics that cause the loss including war, climate change and humanities self-destructive nature. This is tempered by humanities ability to love and positively drive change.
While touching on disenchantment, Alba draws on her own passion as an environmental campaigner and drive to make a positive change in the world. With hypnotic tones, she nods towards her Spanish roots while speaking up about the important things in the world. Bringing a fresh tone to a timeless sound, she combines pop-rock with a hint of neo-soul and funk.
‘Child of the Stars’ opens with a soulful rolling melody that sets the depth of the track. The softness of the opening tumbles into the guitar which adds a bounce to the music. There is a wonderful movement to the melody that takes you through the highs and lows of life. It is a really soulful melody that you slide along as the lyrics pull you into the story of the single. While you slide along the smoothness of the music, that bounce remains to get your head moving lightly as you get into the vibes. There is a piano solo later in the single that just takes the soulful vibes to a new level.
Alba’s vocals gently draw you into the thoughts of the main character of the single. Her performance matches the soulful flow of the melody before bursting on the chorus. She has you soaring on paths of twinkling stars on the chorus before sinking into a soulful flow. As you fall into the thoughts mapped out in the lyrics, you are filled with the feelings Alba is able to effortlessly infuse into each word. There is a slightly retro feeling to her performance, but this has been wrapped beautifully around more modern sensibilities.
Alba contrasts disenchantment with hope in the soulful flows of ‘Child of the Stars’. The single has a retro feeling that has been covered in some neo-soul goodness. Alba’s vocals are powerful and emotive as she draws you into the ups and downs of life only to leave you feeling positive for the future.
