Alan Dreezer – Take Me Back (2023)

With a bucketful of awe-inspiring experience under his belt, singer-songwriter Alan Dreezer has traipsed various genres on his journey as a musician. As part of the pop duo Tara 2, he toured with 80s pop group Brother Beyond; and following that he became a member of the mesmerising pop-rock project ADProject. Together, the group performed sold-out shows, recorded three albums and quickly became one of the most renowned acts in the Essex music scene. We’re here to look at Alan Dreezer as a solo artist.

For over five years (since 2017 to be exact), the UK-based musician made waves across the UK embracing his solo project. His well-received debut album LONDON E12 marked “a significant milestone in his career”. In 2019, he performed at various notable venues across Essex and London. When the pandemic hit, and the live scene died slightly, Dreezer continued honing his sound releasing a critically acclaimed sophomore album in 2021 and winning Indie Boulevard Magazine’s “Best Pop Song 2022” with ‘Butterfly’.

Following his single ’99 Percent’, ‘Take Me Back’ is Dreezer’s second single of 2023 and a track on his upcoming third album, NOTHING CHANGES IF NOTHING CHANGES. Shifting from a contemporary electropop sound in ’99 Percent’, Dreezer tucks contemporary pop sounds beneath an old-school funk in ‘Take Me Back’. Toe-tapping with slips of pop, ‘Take Me Back’ fits effortlessly alongside the likes of Bruno Mars. Yet, while the song can appeal to fans of modern-day music, its nostalgic flair dominates the melody.

Ignoring any distance in time or space, ‘Take Me Back’ takes us back but keeps us in the present. Toe-tapping, hand-clapping shivers of funk break through with a warm guitar, steady beats and Dreezer’s rich vocals. The midway point takes a tap to today adding that slice of 2023 electronic pop before floating to the 1980s with harmonic rhythms. The bold stylings of the guitar are enough to have you twirling about in that Earth, Wind and Fire attitude; however, it is Alan Dreezer’s vocals that embrace you in a sonic hug.

While we have reviewed several of Dreezer’s singles in the past, including the award-winning single ‘Butterfly’, ‘Take Me Back’ is one of his most impressive songs as a solo artist. True, the various genres showcase Dreezer’s versatility and innovation as an artist; for me, however, ‘Take Me Back’ is the song to ensnare your senses and leave you lost in a twirling kaleidoscopic bubble of music. I cannot wait for Dreezer’s new album.
