Alan Dreezer – (Love Didn’t Hurt Me) IT WAS YOU (2024)

From blue-eyed soul to 90s RnB, electropop, indie-pop and funk, singer-songwriter Alan Dreezer’s sonic palette is filled with numerous bright colours. Already an established artist before setting out on his own in 2017, Dreezer had earned a name with several UK-based bands, collaborations with different musicians; now his creativity is poured into his solo project. Dreezer captured our eyes and ears in 2021 with his synth-pop/electropop tune ‘Equal’ and continued with the soul-filled 2022 single ‘Butterfly’. Join us as we turn up our speakers to the latest addition to his repertoire, ‘(Love Didn’t Hurt Me) IT WAS YOU’.

Following his well-received tracks ’99 Percent’ and ‘Take Me Back’, ‘(Love Didn’t Hurt Me) IT WAS YOU’ is the fourth single from Dreezer’s anticipated album NOTHING CHANGES IF NOTHING CHANGES. Unafraid to explore the complexities of life from toxic relationships to positive independence, Dreezer’s singles reach into one’s heart drawing out the pain, anger, frustration and hope embedded within. The new single delves into a world of vulnerability and insecurity that comes with broken relationships.

Recorded and produced with long-time collaborator Elliot Richardson, ‘(Love Didn’t Hurt Me) IT WAS YOU’ brings a blend of old-school soul and RnB to modern-day audiences. Soothing and smooth with a funky attitude, the new track has your head bobbing along from the first chord. A bold bass carries the melody with powerful drums holding up the back, while dynamic guitars weave into a harmonic bounce of soulful music. One aspect I don’t hear often is the incorporation of horns and strings in music – no doubt, it does exist, but Dreezer’s elegant slice of these instruments ups the ante emotionally and melodically.

Influenced by George Michael, particularly his Older era, there is a…well, it’s difficult to describe the hard-hitting, jaw-dropping, “now that’s one helluva soulful singer” snatch to ‘(Love Didn’t Hurt Me) IT WAS YOU’. As a song about painful vulnerability and fragility, Dreezer’s silvery vocals give you a warm understanding hug; simultaneously, there is an empowering realisation pointing a finger at the person who did all the hurting.
