Alan Dreezer – Butterfly (2022)

Alan Dreezer called for equality and kindness with ‘Equal’, before turning inwards for a contemplation of the good and bad in life through ‘Time Stand Still’. With his latest single ‘Butterfly’, he drops us into a moment of infatuation. Bubbling with insecurity, hyper-awareness and that gut-churning feeling of uncertainty over what your next step should be, the single is a fantastic blend of pop and contemporary soul.

Through the lyrics, he hits us with that singular moment when you are in someone’s company and have a physical reaction to them being around, while they remain unaware. Packed with questions that flit through your brain at these times, he expresses a confused state that many people can relate to. As the first single of his upcoming album, it offers another glimpse into the musicality of the artist.

Dreezer’s vocals gently open ‘Butterfly’ with a vulnerable touch. The opening line of the single is a heartfelt, yet slightly anxious, plea to be noticed. As the first verse takes over, he draws us into the feelings and thoughts of being around someone you are infatuated with. There is an understanding that this might not be healthy, but this turns into an ode. His performance has a sprinkling of pop that sparkles as you slide along the soulful movement. It is a really wonderful soulful performance that is rich and infused with the feelings of the track. The chorus is catchy as it compares the person he is infatuated with to a butterfly that calls for you to chase it. Threaded into the rich performance is a touch of insecurity and the uncertainty of whether you should make a move. He has perfectly captured the emotions of feeling that someone is out of your reach, but being unable to stop the feelings you have for them.

Following the initial vulnerable touch of the vocals, a sparkle of notes fills the soundscape. The beat is a stunning fusion of pop and contemporary soul that pounds through your chest. The higher levels are an almost neon shimmer that brings a wash of colours to your senses. Leading up to the chorus, the music drops to allow the vocals to shine, before hitting you with a rather groovy vibe. You can’t help but want to move to the sound of the chorus before the deep twang of the low levels leads you into the next verse.

Using a soulful slide and emotive vocals, Alan Dreezer drops us into feelings of infatuation, insecurity and vulnerability through ‘Butterfly’. His vocals grab your attention with the initial vulnerability, before sliding with rich soulfulness through the tale of the lyrics. The music brings a fusion shimmer to the soundscape, while bolstering the emotive flows of the vocals.
