Ainsley Costello – People Pleaser (2024)

At only 20 years of age, singer-songwriter Ainsley Costello has 19 singles under her belt with over 300,000 streams, features on international radio stations, playlists and critical acclaim from global publications. Not only is she impressing curators and audiences, but each chord takes her closer to world domination. Hailing from Nashville, Costello is quickly carving a niche in the industry as a trailblazer with her “pretty punk” sound. Already on our radar, Costello caught our ears in 2022 with ‘Little Sister’ and ‘Someone’s Someone’. Today, she drags us into her world with her latest single ‘People Pleaser’.

The first release since her 2022 track ‘Cherry On Top’, ‘People Pleaser’ is the first track on a new musical journey for Costello. Taken from her upcoming debut album EXLESS, set for release in September 2024, ‘People Pleaser’ retains Costello’s distinctive pop-rock/pop-punk sound; however, a shift to something more sophisticated within the raw sound seems to exist. It is as if she has matured not only as a musician but as a person since her previous material.

While Costello has only just entered her 20s, she is yet a young woman to experience life, but ‘People Pleaser’ is an intimate exploration of Costello’s experiences – perfect as a catharsis, conversation and connection with audiences floundering (and I’m not speaking exclusively of twenty-something kids). Penned with Nathan Dohse and Christian Harger, Costello explains:

“’People Pleaser’ is an empowerment anthem. It’s about reclaiming your self-worth and setting boundaries. But it’s also a fun ride, it feels like leaving a cathartic therapy session and coasting down the PCH soaking up the sunshine with the top down. It’s a confidence booster song for sure.”

Produced by Christian Harger, ‘People Pleaser’ is a distinctive tap to old-school pop-rock finding a line between Avril Lavigne and the swirling of All American Rejects guitar-driven sounds. Interestingly, while there is a melancholy vulnerability in Costello’s vocals and the overall arrangement, hope slices through in an upbeat, heartfelt, tender melody.
