Aggressive Soccer Moms – The Doppler Effect (2024)

With a sophisticated flourish, Sweden-based group Aggressive Soccer Moms again reaches our ears with their eclectic post-punk experimentalism. From their 2018 single ‘The Outsider of the Year’, they presented a minimalistic vintage post-punk flavour lilting toward vintage 80s sounds; however, as the years passed the sound evolved into a signature concoction of post-punk, pop, punk and new-wave styles. Last year we reviewed their synth-driven track ‘Darling’ and have followed their progress ever since. Today, we discuss Aggressive Soccer Moms’ latest single ‘The Doppler Effect’.

Following their well-received single ‘Guilt’, ‘The Doppler Effect’ shifts from a pulse-racing rush of punk-heightened post-punk to a line between guitar-driven alternative rock and signature post-punk. We hear Aggressive Soccer Moms’ distinctive eclecticism flushed in ‘The Doppler Effect’; however, the inclusion of new band member Tom Holmlund offers a “rawer, more guitar-based fuller sound…” According to the band, a “Bo Diddley meets Lou Reed” effect.

Penned, composed and produced by founding members Anders Bergstrom and Thomas Wahlström, ‘The Doppler Effect’ is a bit disconcerting and kind of uncomfortable at first. A whirlpool of guitars, synths, bass and drums seems to wrap around you in a warped distortion. Overwhelming and breathtaking, it’s a bit dizzying, even with Holmlund’s soaring rock-inspired guitar. YET, just as there’s a bit of an eerie weirdness to ‘The Doppler Effect’, it is as exciting, harmonious and enjoyable.

Clinging to their experimental nature, it is impossible to truly know what Aggressive Soccer Moms have in store – an expect the unexpected effect. Drifting away from minimalism and starkness, but still retaining a sense of barebones brashness, ‘The Doppler Effect’ combines two extremes in its musical parallels of simplicity and kaleidoscopic, confident but weary, odd but calmingly familiar.

So, the overall opinion of ‘The Doppler Effect’ and Aggressive Soccer Moms. For me, the threesome is one of the most intriguing, exciting, inimitable and insatiable bands to blast through my speakers. If you’re looking for conventionalism, then Aggressive Soccer Moms will turn your head with obscurity pushing you toward non-conventionalism and you’ll love every second.
