Aggressive Soccer Moms – That’s How I Feel (2022)

Founded in 2018, Swedish band Aggressive Soccer Moms have become known for their powerful post-punk meets new wave sound. Featured on Edgar Allan Poets, Sinusoidal Music, Mesmerized, and Less Than 1000 Followers (to name a few), Aggressive Soccer Moms has been described as “showing maturity and character [and]…a unique sonic experience…” (Rock Era Magazine).

Beginning as a duo, Aggressive Soccer Moms combined the musicality of Anders Bergström and Thomas Wahlström; however, the addition of saxophonist Stefan Wistrand brings a new dynamic to their music. Still dominated by post-punk influences, this talented group has a hard-hitting lo-fi sound. Yet, with the new saxophonist, the band might be leaning toward a “jazzy” sound in their more recent releases. The latest addition to Aggressive Soccer Moms’ discography is the single ‘That’s How I Feel’.

Taken off their upcoming album Quint (to be released in February 2023), ‘That’s How I Feel’ is an eclectic fusion of smooth jazz with the haziness of post-punk melodies. Unlike ‘I Said No Before’, ‘That’s How I Feel’ blends two styles of music in an obscure arrangement; however, while there is a flow in the diverse genres, a disconcerting and almost uncomfortable contrast exists in the song. It is as if you are set adrift on a wistful sonic river but are being pulled in two directions with an angsty, melancholic punk sound on one side and a mellifluous, soothing jazz on the other.

Driven by spontaneous creativity with an experimental arrangement, ‘That’s How I Feel’ captures the innovative nature of Aggressive Soccer Moms. Yet, while a boundary-breaking depth exists in the new single, the dull vocals and steady post-punk backing are a tribute to the traditional 80s movement. Either way, Aggressive Soccer Moms have an anthemic single with ‘That’s How I Feel’.
