Advents – White Flag (2022)
Passionate, enthusiastic, energetic and aggressive – these are all words that describe US-based band Advents. Born on the outskirts of New York City, Anthony Spizzirro (vocals, Kevin Chapilliquen (guitars), Sebastian Ferlin (guitars), Nor Omar (bass) and Joe Koza (drums) are breeding a new type of rock. Blending elements of metal, hard rock and alternative rock, their music is hard-hitting, powerful and heavy. One of the latest additions to their discography is the single ‘White Flag’.
Taken off their self-titled debut EP, ‘White Flag’ has an aggressive streak from the outset. Pounding drums meld with dynamic guitars within a high-paced rock-inspired arrangement. What I find intriguing in this arrangement is the transition from “in-your-face” metalcore to a soothing type of alternative rock – all in a four-minute package (give or take). Yes, the stark pounding of instrumentation, along with the fierce metal-esque screaming vocal execution, can hit the ears in an assaulting way; however, Spizzirro and his crew elegantly soften their sound for the catchy chorus.
To me, a white flag is a sign of surrender; a desire to talk things over in a battle zone and try to find some sort of truce. When it comes to Advents, ‘White Flag’ never sees white. Spizzirro explains that ‘White Flag’ is about the “…feeling of wanting to give up and actually doing so are two different things. The red theme that ties into this release is very intentional and symbolises a very real feeling of hopelessness, but the flag is never white, and we continue to push on. At times, it may seem easier to throw in the towel, but it is worthwhile to stay for the ride.”
So, overall, what do I think of Advents and ‘White Flag’? In its own brash, hard-hitting way, it has sincerity and brutal honesty in the tune. On the other hand, it does whack you about a bit and shakes you to pay attention. Either way, it’s something I love and I recommend everyone listen to Advents.
