Adry – Well (Unplugged) (2023)

For over a decade, almost 15 years to be exact, singer-songwriter Adry has been sharing his innovative music with audiences. Beginning as a frontman in a high school rock band, Adry found his place and passion in the music world quickly. Since the release of his well-received debut album Rule of Sadness, released in 2009, the UK-based artist has reached international ears marking himself as a pioneer in the rock world. The latest addition to his chart-topping discography is the single ‘Well (Unplugged)’.

Following his 2021 single ‘Drain You’, Adry returns to the blogosphere with an unplugged version of his critically acclaimed 2021 song ‘Well’. ‘Well’ (the radio edit) was Adry’s first release in six years after the grunge-influenced song ‘Pretty’. The single retains a sense of grunge in its melody; however, a slip of indie-rock slips through with shimmers of synths beneath the rock sound. Is this an evolution in his music? I don’t know but what I do know is it shows Adry’s chameleonic musicality.

As I mentioned, this review explores an unplugged version of ‘Well’. Reminding me of Nirvana’s 1994 album Unplugged & More, Adry’s single has a soft soothing tone taken from a distorted, heavier grunge-filled original. Interestingly, while the unplugged version is mellifluous with a tranquil toe-tapping vibe to soothe any inner demons; a sliver of angst lurks beneath. Laidback and calm, you can feel the sincerity of Adry but a mild lilt of desperation waivers through the dulcet vocals. As with Kurt Cobain, Adry’s voice layers hopefulness with a vulnerable rawness.

Recorded and produced alongside singer-songwriter Adam Peri, Adry explores human fragility in a mesmerising four minutes of sonic mastery.

In addition to the single, Adry released an audio video on YouTube that can be viewed here. He also released an official music video for the original version of ‘Well’. You can view the video below and on his YouTube channel. This video uses lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy.
